TOKYO — A moderate 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Japan early Sunday, shaking the greater Tokyo metropolitan area, injuring more than 20 people, and causing localized transport disruptions.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the tremor struck at a depth of 70 kilometers with its epicenter located in the southern section of Ibaraki Prefecture. The sudden shaking triggered emergency mobile alerts across the region. Authorities confirmed that there was no danger of a tsunami, and nuclear power operators reported no anomalies at regional facilities.
Prefectural officials reported that over 20 people sustained minor-to-moderate injuries across neighboring prefectures, mostly from falling or striking furniture while moving in panic after being jolted awake. The tremor also impacted regional infrastructure, resulting in temporary delays for express train services connecting Tokyo and Narita Airport, though Shinkansen bullet train operations continued running normally. Minor utility disruptions, including brief power outages affecting hundreds of homes and a localized water pipe burst in Tokyo's Koto ward, were swiftly addressed by municipal repair crews.
