Shadow Epidemic: Africa CDC Warns Real DRC Ebola Toll Could Triple Official Figures

ADDIS ABABA / KINSHASA — Public health authorities have issued a stark warning regarding the accelerating Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), estimating that the true caseload across affected provinces may be nearly three times higher than official figures indicate.

While official health tallies have recorded over 5,200 confirmed infections and more than 2,500 deaths, epidemiological tracking and field surveillance by the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) suggest that widespread under-reporting in remote jungle sectors means the actual burden could run into the tens of thousands. Health officials note that a significant majority of fatalities continue to occur within local communities rather than designated treatment centers, underscoring persistent gaps in early detection, contact tracing, and medical access.

The unprecedented velocity of the outbreak—driven by the Bundibugyo virus strain—has strained containment resources across multiple health zones. International health agencies are fast-tracking emergency medical supplies, diagnostic tools, and initial vaccine allocations to frontline containment zones in an effort to curb further cross-border transmission in Central Africa.
