Madrid Faces Growing Scrutiny Over €6.3M Luxury Penthouse Bought as 'Temporary Office'

MADRID — Isabel Díaz Ayuso, the outspoken right-wing leader of the Madrid region, is facing intense political pressure and a judicial investigation after it was revealed that her regional government spent €6.3 million (£5.4 million) to purchase a luxury residential penthouse purportedly to serve as a temporary workspace.

The transaction, executed in April through the regional administration, targeted a high-end property in the affluent Chamberí district of the Spanish capital. According to regional spokespersons, the flat was acquired to house Ayuso's temporary office while official seats at the Real Casa de Correos underwent renovations.

However, the purchase has triggered widespread controversy and legal challenges. Urban planning laws dictate that the building is zoned strictly for residential use, meaning it cannot legally function as an administrative office. Investigative reports revealed that the regional administration specifically requested a luxury layout featuring between 250 and 400 square meters of space alongside a large terrace—specifications that critics noted are unusual for government offices.

Ayuso initially dismissed the reports as a politically motivated smear campaign, asserting that she had "the faintest idea" about the purchase and that the penthouse was intended strictly for institutional meetings rather than personal use. Amid mounting fallout, the regional administration announced that the property will be put up for sale, with proceeds slated for donation to victims of local wildfires.

Despite the planned sale, a Madrid court is currently reviewing five separate complaints regarding the acquisition, and opposition leaders have seized on the scandal to demand greater transparency and accountability from the regional leadership.
