WASHINGTON — The United States Department of the Treasury has officially issued a new $1 coin bearing the portrait of President Donald Trump, marking the first time a living U.S. president has appeared on circulating American currency in a century. Released as part of nationwide commemorations marking the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, the move has ignited significant debate and legal scrutiny across Washington.
According to the U.S. Mint, the newly minted coin features a gold-colored finish made from a composite of copper, zinc, manganese, and nickel, displaying Trump's likeness alongside the inscriptions "Liberty" and "In God We Trust". The reverse side of the currency depicts a variation of the U.S. presidential seal featuring a bald eagle and the number "250". While Treasury officials have confirmed that the items are intended to be in circulation as legal tender, rolls and bags of the coins are currently being sold to collectors through the U.S. Mint at marked-up prices.
The issuance runs contrary to long-standing federal statutes and historical conventions that prohibit living individuals from being featured on U.S. currency. Legal experts and congressional critics have questioned the legality of the rollout, noting that previous restrictions date back to the 19th century to prevent the appearance of self-aggrandizement by sitting leaders. Supporters and administration officials, however, have defended the initiative as a patriotic tribute to the nation's semiquincentennial, pointing to rare historical precedents such as the 1926 commemorative half-dollar featuring then-President Calvin Coolidge.
