WASHINGTON — The U.S. State Department has officially approved a potential foreign military sale to Saudi Arabia involving Joint Direct Attack Munitions-Extend Range (JDAM-ER) systems and associated equipment valued at an estimated $5 billion.
According to notifications provided by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the proposed transaction encompasses thousands of guidance kits and general-purpose bombs, with aerospace giant Boeing designated as the primary contractor. Additionally, the State Department greenlit a separate potential $750 million agreement for AGT-1500 tank engines, manufactured by Honeywell.
Administration officials emphasized that the package aims to strengthen the kingdom's airborne defense capabilities amidst escalating regional friction.
"The proposed sale will improve Saudi Arabia's airborne defense capability to counter current and future regional threats, strengthen its homeland defense, and improve interoperability with systems operated by U.S. forces and other Gulf Region partners," the State Department said in an official statement.
Washington noted that the transaction reinforces U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives by supporting a major non-NATO ally. The package now heads to Congress for final review, where lawmakers retain the authority to block or modify the transaction under the Arms Export Control Act.
