KINSHASA — A nurse has been killed and another health worker seriously injured in an attack while responding to an Ebola alert in eastern Congo, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported on Monday.
The attack took place on Saturday in Bafwasende, in Tshopo province. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and Africa regional director Mohamed Yakub Janabi condemned the violence and called for health workers to be protected.
The attack comes as Congo battles a major Ebola outbreak. The latest reported figures indicate more than 9,800 cases and over 4,700 deaths since the outbreak began in May, making it the deadliest Ebola outbreak in the country’s history.
The WHO has warned that violence against medical teams, misinformation and public fear are undermining efforts to contain the disease. Local authorities have not publicly identified the attackers.
The incident highlights the security challenges facing health workers as they attempt to control the outbreak and reach vulnerable communities.
