BHUBANESWAR — Andhra Pradesh and Odisha have stepped up disaster preparedness as a developing system over the Bay of Bengal is forecast to intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm and approach the Andhra Pradesh coast around October 28.
The India Meteorological Department forecasts that the system could cross the coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, bringing sustained winds of 115–125 kmph and gusts of up to 140 kmph.
Odisha has mobilised disaster response teams and fire services. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast in Ganjam, Gajapati, Koraput, Rayagada and Malkangiri districts. Authorities are preparing to move people from vulnerable areas to safer locations.
Andhra Pradesh has also directed health authorities to ensure uninterrupted emergency medical services during the expected period of severe weather.
Fishermen have been advised to follow official warnings and avoid unsafe sea conditions. Residents in vulnerable coastal areas should monitor updates from the India Meteorological Department and follow local authorities’ instructions.
The storm’s track and intensity may change as the system develops.
