RIYADH — Two crew members were killed when a Saudi AH-6i reconnaissance helicopter crashed in the Najran region of Saudi Arabia, the Saudi-led coalition said on Sunday.
The helicopter crashed inside Saudi territory due to a technical malfunction, according to coalition spokesperson Major General Turki Al-Maliki. The aircraft was operating in an area under the jurisdiction of the Saudi National Guard Ministry.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions near the border with Yemen, where Houthi forces have carried out attacks in recent weeks.
Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said on Saturday that the group had shot down a Saudi Apache helicopter near Najran. However, it remains unclear whether the Houthi claim and the crash reported by the Saudi-led coalition involved the same aircraft.
The coalition attributed the crash to a technical malfunction. Further details about the two crew members and the circumstances of the incident have not been released.
