New Delhi— The Union Health Ministry has sought detailed records on faculty leave and hospital operations from three central government medical institutions in Delhi as part of a review of vacation arrangements for teaching doctors.
The institutions include Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital, ABVIMS and Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, and Lady Hardinge Medical College and its associated hospitals.
An expert committee set up by the ministry is examining whether summer and winter vacations, along with academic and on-duty leave, affect patient care and medical education.
The institutions have been asked to provide details of faculty strength, vacation schedules, the number of doctors permitted to take leave at a time, and the deployment of resident and non-teaching doctors during vacation periods.
The ministry has also sought monthly data on outpatient attendance, hospital admissions, intensive care unit occupancy and surgeries for 2024-25 and 2025-26.
The review will assess whether existing staffing arrangements ensure uninterrupted clinical services and teaching activities. The committee is expected to recommend measures based on its findings.
The ministry has not announced any decision to reduce or cancel doctors' vacations.
