NEW DELHI — Indian defence technology company IG Defence is preparing to move its JWALA interceptor missile project to system-level testing in the coming months, according to reports. The company has reportedly completed successful tests of two solid rocket motors developed for the micro-missile.

JWALA is being designed to intercept and destroy drones and other aerial threats at a relatively low cost. As drones become more widely used in modern conflicts, affordable ways to counter them are becoming increasingly important for air-defence forces.
The missile is being designed for a range of two to five kilometres and an engagement altitude of between 50 metres and 5,000 metres. Its planned components include target-detection and tracking technology, avionics, a warhead and other electronic subsystems. These are design targets, and the missile’s actual performance will need to be confirmed through further testing.
IG Defence is also developing GRID, a system intended to help detect aerial threats and coordinate defensive responses. The company describes JWALA as India’s first indigenous micro-missile project developed in the private sector.
Successful system-level and subsequent flight tests could establish JWALA as an additional option for countering drone attacks. However, its operational capability, reliability and readiness for military use will depend on the results of further trials.
