WASHINGTON — The United States has approved a proposed sale of 500 Patriot PAC-3 interceptor missiles to Ukraine in a deal valued at approximately $2.1 billion, as Kyiv seeks to strengthen its air defences against continuing Russian attacks.
The US State Department said the proposed sale would improve Ukraine's ability to defend its airspace and protect cities and critical infrastructure from Russian missile strikes. The Patriot system is designed to intercept incoming ballistic and other aerial threats.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the American decision, describing it as an important step towards strengthening the country's defence capabilities. However, he expressed concern that the delivery of the missiles could take several years.
Ukraine has repeatedly urged its Western allies to provide additional air defence systems as Russian attacks continue to target key infrastructure and populated areas. The Patriot interceptors are considered particularly important in countering advanced missile threats.
Although Washington has approved the proposed sale, it has not announced a delivery schedule. The timing of the supply remains a major concern for Ukraine as it continues efforts to protect its territory from Russian attacks.
