NEW DELHI — India is preparing a dedicated policy for data centres to address concerns about rising electricity demand and prevent additional costs from being passed on to ordinary consumers.
Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasada said on Wednesday that the government wants to support the expansion of data centres without placing an unfair burden on electricity users.
Data centres are essential to cloud computing, artificial intelligence and many online services. Their rapid growth, however, is increasing demand for power and water, prompting concerns about the capacity of local infrastructure to meet new requirements.
Some proposed projects have also faced local objections over their potential impact on electricity supplies, water resources and the environment.
The minister did not announce a timetable for the policy or explain what specific measures it would include.
India is seeking to expand its digital infrastructure while managing the costs and resource demands associated with large computing facilities. The proposed policy is intended to address those competing priorities as demand for AI and other digital services continues to grow.
