KOLKATA — The death toll from a stampede at a Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata rose to 19 on Sunday morning, with around 35 people reported injured. Some of the injured are said to be in a serious condition.
The incident occurred between 7 pm and 8 pm on Saturday at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal. Preliminary reports suggest that heavy rain prompted people to rush into the crowded venue. Part of an exit gate reportedly collapsed, adding to the panic as people tried to get out. An investigation is under way to establish the exact circumstances of the tragedy.
The West Bengal government has announced compensation of ₹25 lakh for the family of each person who died and ₹5 lakh for each injured person. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has separately announced interim assistance of ₹2 lakh for each deceased person's family and ₹50,000 for each injured person.
