PM Modi to Inaugurate Chennai Metro Phase II Stretch Today; Passenger Services from 4 PM

CHENNAI — Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Poonamallee Bypass–Vadapalani stretch of Chennai Metro Phase II on Sunday, October 11. The project has been built at a cost of around ₹4,900 crore. According to the official schedule, the Prime Minister is expected to take a metro ride at around 11:30 am, travelling from Porur Bypass station to Poonamallee Bypass station and back.

The 14.64-km stretch has 17 stations, but only 11 will initially be open to passengers. These are Poonamallee Bypass, Poonamallee Bus Terminus, Poonamallee Government Hospital, Karayanchavadi, Kumananchavadi, Kattupakkam, Ayyappanthangal, Thelliyaragaram, Porur Bypass, Porur Junction and Vadapalani. Trains will initially bypass six stations on the double-decker section.

Passenger services will begin at 4 pm on inauguration day and continue until 9 pm. From Monday, October 12, regular services will operate from 7 am to 9 pm daily. Fifteen trains will initially run on the route. The maximum fare between Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani has been fixed at ₹40.

Although the corridor is designed for driverless operations, trains will initially operate with staff on board to supervise services. Chennai Metro Rail Limited plans to introduce driverless operations by mid-2027, subject to the completion of testing and the required safety certification.

The new stretch is expected to improve public transport links between Chennai’s rapidly growing western suburbs and other parts of the city, offering commuters an alternative to road travel.
