IMPHAL — Three villagers were killed and at least three others injured after armed assailants opened fire on a group collecting firewood near the border of Imphal East and Kangpokpi districts in Manipur on Monday, October 19.
The victims belonged to the Meitei community, according to reports. The attack took place near Nongshum and Khongbal, an area affected by continuing tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities.
The shooting triggered protests in Imphal, where residents brought the bodies of two victims to the entrance of Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh’s residence, demanding accountability and stronger measures to protect civilians. Police subsequently intervened to disperse the gathering.
The identity of the attackers has not been independently established. Meitei groups have blamed Kuki militants for the assault, while Kuki groups have denied the allegations, according to reports.
Chief Minister Khemchand Singh condemned the killings and directed officials to strengthen security in vulnerable areas. Security operations were stepped up following the attack.
The incident has renewed concerns about a possible escalation of tensions in Manipur, where violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities since May 2023 has resulted in deaths, displacement and prolonged instability.
Authorities are continuing efforts to contain the situation and prevent further violence.
