PARIS —French authorities reported 1,314 detentions following nationwide demonstrations on Saturday. The Interior Ministry said 53 security personnel were injured and 24 businesses were looted.
The ministry recorded 289 demonstrations and gatherings involving around 410,000 people across the country. The CGT trade union estimated the turnout at about 800,000, while police put the number in Paris at 110,000.
The protests, which began around education-related demands, widened into a broader movement over the cost of living, inequality and government policy. Many marches began peacefully, but clashes were reported in several cities later in the day.
The official and union estimates differ substantially, and the figures remain dependent on the counting method used. Authorities are preparing for further demonstrations as organisers call for continued action.
