ANDHRA PRADESH — Authorities in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha have stepped up emergency preparations as Cyclone Arnab is forecast to cross the Andhra Pradesh–Yanam coast on October 28.
The India Meteorological Department expects the storm to make landfall between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam as a very severe cyclonic storm, bringing sustained winds of 115–125 km/h and gusts of up to 140 km/h. Heavy rainfall is also expected in vulnerable coastal areas.
Officials said 4,711 pregnant women in at-risk areas of Andhra Pradesh had been moved to health centres and hospitals as a precaution. Educational institutions in affected districts have been ordered to close from October 27 to 31. Fifteen teams of the National Disaster Response Force have been deployed, while the state government has released ₹270 million for relief operations across 20 districts.
Odisha has also intensified preparations in six southern districts. Authorities are arranging evacuations, preparing emergency shelters and restricting fishing at sea. Access to vulnerable hills, waterfalls and dams has also been restricted for tourists.
Central and state agencies are monitoring the situation, with preparedness measures also under review in Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Puducherry. Heavy rainfall is possible in parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar as the weather system moves inland.
Fishermen have been advised to stay out of the affected sea areas until October 29. Residents in coastal and low-lying locations should follow official weather bulletins and local evacuation instructions. Authorities have urged people not to take unnecessary risks as the cyclone approaches.
