NEW DELHI — Indian Railways will extend its optional travel insurance scheme to eligible passengers booking reserved tickets at railway reservation counters from October 27.
The scheme, previously available to passengers booking tickets online through IRCTC, offers insurance for a premium of 45 paise per passenger, with coverage of up to ₹10 lakh for death or permanent total disability arising from covered railway accidents or incidents.
The policy also provides up to ₹7.5 lakh for permanent partial disability, up to ₹2 lakh towards hospitalisation expenses and ₹10,000 for the transportation of mortal remains, subject to the applicable terms.
The insurance is optional. Passengers booking at reservation counters must provide a mobile number and make the required payments digitally to opt for coverage.
The Railway Board's decision follows a Supreme Court direction to extend the facility to eligible offline bookings. Passengers should check the policy conditions and exclusions before opting in.
