NEW DELHI — India’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has amended the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, to facilitate vehicles designed to run on high-ethanol fuels, including E85 and E100.
The changes explicitly include E100 in the emission-certification provisions for flex-fuel vehicles. Such vehicles must meet the safety and emission requirements applicable to their category.
E85 contains up to 85 per cent ethanol, while E100 refers to fuel consisting predominantly of ethanol. Flex-fuel vehicles are specially engineered to operate on specified petrol and ethanol blends.
The regulatory update supports the development of alternative-fuel technology in India. However, the new rules do not permit ordinary petrol vehicles to use E85 or E100; only vehicles designed and certified for those fuels can use them.
