WASHINGTON — The United States has suspended several major technology companies, including Indian IT firms Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys, Wipro, HCLTech and Cognizant, from the Permanent Labour Certification (PERM) programme, an important step in the employment-based Green Card process.
The action also affects other companies, including Capgemini, Microsoft and Adobe. The US government has raised concerns about alleged misuse of employment and immigration rules. These are allegations, and the companies' inclusion in the action does not by itself establish wrongdoing.
The PERM process allows employers to seek certification that hiring a foreign worker for a particular position will not adversely affect qualified US workers. The suspension could delay permanent residency applications for some foreign employees, including Indian professionals working in the US.
TCS has said the move is not expected to have a significant impact on its workforce plans or client operations. The wider impact on affected workers and companies will depend on how the restrictions are applied and how the cases proceed.
