WATERFORD, Ireland — Gardaí have launched a murder investigation after four people—a man, a woman, and two children—died following an early morning house fire in Waterford City.
Emergency services responded to reports of a blaze shortly after 5:00 AM on Tuesday at a residential property in the Birchwood estate, south of the city centre.
Four occupants inside the two-storey residence were confirmed dead at the scene. Two other children rescued from the burning property sustained serious, life-threatening injuries and were transferred to a specialist hospital in Dublin for urgent treatment.
The incident is being treated as a deliberate arson attack. Gardaí cordoned off the area as a crime scene while forensic collision and scene investigators moved in. Post-mortem examinations are scheduled to establish the exact cause of death.
An incident room has been established at Waterford Garda Station under the direction of a Senior Investigating Officer. Investigators have appealed to anyone who was in the vicinity of Birchwood in the early hours of Tuesday morning, or anyone who may possess dashcam or CCTV footage, to contact Waterford Garda Station.
The investigation remains ongoing.
