Three Malayali Youths Killed in Germany Apartment Blaze; Resident Arrested on Suspicion of Murder

BOCHUM / BERLIN: In a tragic incident, three young Indian nationals from Kerala were killed in a major fire at a multi-family residential building in the western German city of Bochum early Tuesday morning. Five other residents suffered severe smoke inhalation and were hospitalized.

Local media identified the deceased as two women aged 25 and 27, and a 26-year-old man: Anjali Sheela Joy, Sivin Johny, and Nova Sabu. Anjali was a native of Kollam, while Nova hailed from Santhigram in Idukki district. Nova, daughter of Sabu, had moved to Germany six months ago for employment.

Emergency responders were alerted to the blaze at around 4:15 AM. Firefighters faced severe obstacles during rescue efforts as dense smoke and flames tore through the central stairwell, cutting off the building's standard evacuation route and forcing crews to rescue trapped occupants from windows using ladders and jump cushions. First responders discovered the bodies of the three victims inside an apartment; resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful.

Preliminary forensic examinations by investigators ruled out a technical malfunction, establishing strong suspicion of arson. Acting on the findings, German police provisionally detained a 41-year-old resident of the building on suspicion of murder. A dedicated homicide squad is questioning the suspect under the direction of the Bochum Public Prosecutor's Office to establish the motive and circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police had previously responded to a disturbance at the same residential address on Sunday. However, authorities noted that whether that prior dispute has any direct link to the fatal fire remains subject to further investigation.
