KYIV — At least 26 people were killed and five others injured in Russian airstrikes on a school being used as a humanitarian aid distribution centre in Komyshuvakha, in Ukraine's southeastern Zaporizhzhia region, Ukrainian authorities said. The attack took place on November 2, with the death toll rising from the initial figure of 24 as rescue operations continued. The school was not being used for regular classes because of its proximity to the frontline. It served as a shelter and a regular distribution point for humanitarian assistance to local residents. Among those killed were two emergency service workers and four police officers.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian forces carried out further strikes after the initial bombing, dropping additional bombs on the shelter where people had gathered for safety. Rescue operations were complicated by the threat of further attacks in the area. Zelenskyy condemned the incident, saying the location was regularly used to provide assistance to civilians. Russia had not publicly commented on the attack at the time of reporting. The incident has renewed international concerns over civilian safety and the protection of humanitarian facilities amid the continuing war between Russia and Ukraine.
