Canberra — Australia has tightened enforcement in its aged care sector, with 577 people currently listed as banned from involvement in aged care services, according to the latest reports. The list reportedly includes Indian nationals, drawing attention within the Indian community in Australia.
The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission is responsible for issuing banning orders to protect older people receiving care. Orders may be imposed when individuals are considered unsuitable to work in aged care, breach the Aged Care Code of Conduct or pose an immediate or serious risk to the safety, health or wellbeing of older people. Authorities can also restrict individuals who have never previously worked in the sector.
According to the latest report, 194 people were added to the list during 2026. Of these, 86 received permanent bans, while 108 were barred for periods ranging from one to 15 years. Not everyone on the register necessarily has a previous employment history in aged care.
Permanent and Temporary Restrictions
Banning orders can be permanent or apply for a specified period. Depending on the circumstances, individuals may be prohibited from all government-funded aged care services or restricted from particular types of services and activities.
The Commission maintains a public register containing details of banning orders and their conditions. Aged care providers are required to regularly check the register when recruiting staff to ensure that banned individuals are not engaged in restricted roles.
The official register does not separately identify the nationality of those listed. Therefore, the exact number of Indian nationals among the banned individuals could not be independently established.
