US Midterm Elections Set to Test Trump’s Grip on Congress

WASHINGTON — Americans will vote on November 3 in a closely watched midterm election that will determine control of the US Congress for the final two years of President Donald Trump’s term. The key question is whether Trump’s Republican Party can retain its narrow majorities in both chambers.

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats are being contested. Republicans currently hold a 218–214 majority in the House and a 53–47 advantage in the Senate. Democrats need a net gain of four seats in each chamber to take control.

The campaign has focused on the cost of living, fuel prices, immigration policy and the economic decisions of the Trump administration. More than 52 million Americans had already cast their ballots early ahead of election day, according to reports.

A Democratic takeover of the House would give the party greater authority to scrutinise the administration, conduct investigations and issue congressional subpoenas. A change in Senate control could also affect the confirmation of presidential appointments and the progress of key legislation.

Even if Republicans lose control of one or both chambers, Trump would retain his presidential veto and significant executive powers. However, a Congress controlled by Democrats could make it more difficult for his administration to advance its legislative agenda.

The outcome is expected to shape the political direction of the United States and influence the administration’s domestic and foreign policy priorities during the remainder of Trump’s term.
