FRANKFURT — Gen Z-led protests across Germany turned violent on Saturday, with clashes between demonstrators and police, looting and damage to shops in Frankfurt. More than 30 people were provisionally detained, and several police officers were injured.
Tens of thousands of young people took to the streets in more than 30 German cities, including Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich, demanding better education, lower living costs and greater social fairness. The movement also opposes compulsory military service.
While most demonstrations remained peaceful during the day, violence broke out in several cities later in the evening. In Frankfurt, masked groups smashed shop windows, looted stores and threw fireworks and other objects at police and emergency services. Authorities sealed off parts of the city centre and deployed more than 1,000 police officers.
The situation had calmed by early Sunday, although police maintained a strong presence in the city. The organisers distanced themselves from the violence, saying the movement stood for peaceful protest.
