Expected To Make Major Travel Change To All Irish Airports After Cutting 100m Carry-On Liquid Restrictions

Shannon Airport is expected to make a major travel change to all Irish airports - after cutting 100m carry-on liquid restrictions.

This facility is currently only available at Shannon Airport. Travel expert Egan Corey said similar technology could be introduced at major airports. Following in the footsteps of Ireland's major airports, such as Shannon and Donegal airports, other airports are bringing in a new scanner to enforce 100m restrictions.

With the advent of high-tech scanning systems, the 100ml rule may be dropped at airports in the future. Travel experts say similar technology could be introduced at major airports in the next 12 months.

Restrictions on 100ml liquid containers were imposed across the EU in 2006 in response to a terrorist attack warning issued in the UK in August 2005.

Shannon and Donegal airports introduced 3D scanning technology last year at a cost of 2.5 million euros, eliminating the hassle of passengers having to remove liquids and laptops from their bags during inspections.

This major change in travel rules will apply to Irish passengers disembarking from Shannon Airport - carry-on liquids will no longer be limited to 100ml containers. Shannon chiefs have introduced a new passenger screening system, which means that the old 100ml restrictions on liquids in carry-on bags will no longer apply.

Shannon's passengers can carry liquids inside the cabin luggage without restriction on the size of the boat, allowing it to pass "very quickly" through the safe. Airport passengers have been asked that the old liquid restrictions may still apply if they enter another airport as part of a transfer or return flight.

Egan Corey pointed out that despite the introduction of new technology, the old restrictions are still in place and need to be changed. The old rules still apply to Heathrow and Shannon. However, individual airports are very happy to have such technology upgrades.

The new technology will benefit from managing the long queues of security that arise after the Covid. The new technology is expected to be available at all major airports in the UK by the end of this year.
