President Ram Nath Kovind Presents Padma Shri Award To Ireland's Professor Rutger Kortenhorst


President Ram Nath Kovind presents Padma Shri award to Ireland's Professor Rutger Kortenhorst for his contribution to popularising Sanskrit in Irish schools. Rutger Kortenhorst was also honoured by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations with the 'World Sanskrit Prize' in 2020.

One of India’s highest civilian honours, President Ramnath Kovind bestowed roughly 128 Padma awards, India's highest civilian honour, in persons from many walks of life, on Monday. 

In one episode of the show 'Mann Ki Baat' which aired on August 29, 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored the Rutger Court host.

I have recently come to know many such people who are involved in inspiring efforts to teach Sanskrit in foreign countries, ”Modi said at the event. “Mr. Rutger Courtenhost, a well-known Sanskrit scholar and teacher in Ireland who teaches Sanskrit to young people, is one of these individuals. Sanskrit language is also essential in the development of cultural relations between India and Ireland. He added.

“I work to promote Sanskrit because I love this language. I live in Ireland where we teach our students the Sanskrit language. Sanskrit gives people a deeper understanding of themselves. I am delighted and honoured to receive the Padma Shri Award,” Professor Rutger Kortenhorst was quoted as saying in a tweet by ANI. 


On Monday, President Ramnath Kovind presented Rutger Kortenhorst, an Ireland Sanskrit teacher at John Scottus Senior School in Dublin, Ireland, with the Padma Shri Award.  He was awarded the Padma Shri because of his dedicated work to propagate the Sanskrit language in Ireland.

At the age of 21 he started his journey of life with Sanskrit, and the Indian Embassy in Dublin published a press release about this teacher who saw Sanskrit as his way of life, and Cortenhost was associated with the Advaita Vedanta philosophy of the country. In Bangalore in 2006 and 2007, Dr. As a guest of Ramachandra Bhatt, he had the opportunity to study the Thaithiriya Upanishad, grammar, Vivekachoodamani, and spoken Sanskrit. He studied the language for years before deciding to teach it in Ireland. Cortenhost spent most of his summer vacation in India, where he spent some time in Puducherry.

Out of the 128 awardees, nine of them were foreign recipients. Apart from Indian-origin winners such as Satya Nadella, Madhur Jaffrey and Sundar Pichai, there were people from countries like Russia, Poland, Ireland, and Thailand who were conferred. One of them is a professor named Rutger Kortenhorst.
