Ongoing delays at the airport are very serious - Oireachtas Transport Committee. An urgent plan should be drawn up to reduce airport congestion - Chairman of the Oireachtas Committee.
Kieran O'Donnell, chairwoman of the O'Reilly's Transport Committee, described the ongoing delays at the airport as "very serious". He was speaking after committee members visited Dublin Airport and held discussions with management and staff. Long queues for security have been reported in recent weeks. The chairman of the Oireachtas Committee said there was an urgent need to formulate an "emergency plan" to deal with the possible increase in passenger numbers at Dublin Airport ahead of Easter.
Last week, Ryanair asked the government to call in the army to resolve the long security queues at Dublin Airport. O'Donnell confirmed that he was asked if he needed defense forces to handle the situation. He said a short-term plan was needed to resolve the issue within the next ten days and clarity was needed on how to speed up recruitment numbers.
The Dublin Airport Authority recently recruited 100 security screeners, in which case Dublin Airport is seeking to hire an additional 300 screeners.
The Dublin Airport Authority said the waiting time for security checks at Terminal 1 during rush hours on Saturday morning was 47 minutes. The peak queue time at Terminal 2 was 33 minutes between 6am and 8am on Saturday. A DAU spokesman said passengers seemed to be heeding the advice to arrive 3.5 hours before departure so as not to miss their flights.
O'Donnell said it was unacceptable for passengers to experience excessive delays, but added that he had assured his committee that people would not lose their flights as a result of those delays. Dalton Phillips, CEO of Plan Die, will submit to the Transport Committee on Wednesday a plan on how to deal with the expected increase in the number of passengers during the holiday season.
