The Indian Consulate General in New York condemned the attack on an elderly Sikh man, describing it as "deeply disturbing" and said they were in contact with the police investigating this heinous crime.
Nirmal Singh, 70, was allegedly assaulted without provocation on Sunday morning in Richmond Hill, Queens. The images shared on social media show Singh wearing a blood-stained turban, face and clothes that shocked the Indian community. The consulate on Monday tweeted that there was "deep unrest" over the incident.
"We condemn the violent attack and are in contact with the New York Police Department and local authorities investigating the matter." We are also in touch with local community organizations to ensure the welfare of the victims, ”the Indian Consulate General said in a tweet on Monday.
New York Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said NYPD Chief of Detective James Essig was investigating the case.
"Together in every community, we condemn the violence in our city - the person responsible (s) will be caught," Sewell said. Police have asked anyone with information about the attack to call the department.
Singh was repeatedly punched in the face by an unidentified assailant around 6:45 a.m. Sunday, according to a report on Spectrum News NY1. According to Singh's translator Harpreet Singh Tour, the assailant "approached" Singh from behind and fled the scene, the report said.
"Singh is a tourist from India," he said, adding that since arriving in New York, he has been able to walk back to the cultural center where he lives after the attack. Singh was admitted to a local hospital, where he is being treated.
