UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson Will Travel To India This Week; On April 21, Johnson Will Visit Ahmedabad, The Capital Of Gujarat

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson will travel to India this week to discuss trade and security with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has taken a neutral stance on Russia's war in Ukraine. This is Johnson's first visit to India since becoming Prime Minister. Johnson's office said he and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold in - depth talks in Delhi on April 22 on strategic defense, diplomacy and economic partnership.

Johnson said the visit on April 21-22 would "focus on issues of real importance to the people of our two countries (including job creation, economic growth, energy security and defense). Enjoys a long and historic relationship that has been elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership at the 2021 India-UK Virtual Summit, ”the government said in a statement.

On April 21, Johnson will visit Ahmedabad, the capital of Gujarat, the "ancestral home" of the Anglo-Indian population of about half of Britain's former colonial power. On April 21, the British Prime Minister will visit Ahmedabad for the first time. This is the first visit by a British Prime Minister to Gujarat, the ancestral home of half the British-Indian population in the UK.

The inclination of Indo-Pacific foreign and defense policies in the aftermath of Brexit makes the UK a major partner of the UK following its announcement. "India, as a major economic power and the largest democracy in the world, is the UK's most valuable strategic partner in these uncertain times," he added.  Increase bilateral trade to 28 billion.

The Indian government said in a statement that Johnson and Modi would exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest in Pacific Asia. Ukraine is likely to dominate discussions on international issues with Johnson, which is expected to explain Modi's recent visit to Kiev. The visit follows Russia's decision to ban Johnson and several of his ministers from the country.

In his first statement to India as a British leader, Johnson said before the visit, "It is imperative that democracies and friends stand together when our peace and prosperity are threatened by dictatorships."

In addition to Ukraine, the talks are expected to focus on bilateral trade between the two leaders, who are looking for ways to speed up negotiations for a free trade agreement. India and the UK had recently terminated the second round of negotiations for the proposed agreement.

Britain and India have differing views on Russia's occupation of Ukraine. When London imposed economic sanctions on Moscow and laid down arms, the Modi government did not publicly condemn the Kremlin or support the UN Security Council vote condemning Moscow's "attack" on its neighbors. India says Russia is a long-term friend and an essential pillar of foreign policy and relies on its strategic partnership with Moscow for its national security. After Britain left the European Union, the Conservative government sought to increase trade and security ties with the countries of the Asia-Pacific region.

Downing Street said Johnson is expected to announce investments in key industries in the UK and India, as well as cooperation in science, health and technology in Gujarat.
