Australians have elected Anthony Albanese, the ‘half-Irish, half-Italian’ leader of the Labor Party, to serve as their next Prime Minister.
Australia's Labor Party is set to take office for the first time since 2013, as voters oust the conservative government of Prime Minister Scott Morrison in a shift that could lead to more action on climate change, women's issues and anti-corruption efforts.
"I want to unite the country," a delighted Mr. Albanese said as he headed towards a victory celebration. "I think people want to come together, look for our common interest, look towards that sense of common purpose. I think people have had enough of division, what they want is to come together as a nation and I intend to lead that."
Morrison conceded defeat Saturday night, congratulating Anthony Albanese on his victory in the Labor Party, which ended with a majority in the 151-seat parliament. The Australian Broadcasting Commission said Labor won at least 72 seats, while Morrison's Liberal-National Alliance won 52 seats, while the rest were won by independents and third parties.
“In this country, at a time like this, when we look around the world, especially when we see people in Ukraine fighting for their freedom and independence, I think we can think of our glory on a night like tonight. Democracy, ”Morrison acknowledged. "I congratulate Anthony Albanese and the Labor Party and wish him and his government all the best."
Environmental issues helped shift the vote, with climate-focused independents and the Green Party - which has seen its best results ever - snatching once-secure seats from two major parties. Treasurer Josh Friedenberg, widely regarded as the future leader of the Liberal-National Coalition, is the most prominent legislator to have fallen - raising new questions about who will take the helm from Morrison.
However, that was not all good news for Labor. According to the latest figures, the party won only 31.7% of the primary vote, the worst result in decades and the lowest margin of government since World War II.
Albanese, a politician with working class roots, is poised to inherit a record low unemployment economy facing the fastest inflation since June 2001. He has promised to increase wages for workers and improve social security.
