Post-Pandemic Irish Citizenship Ceremonies Today there are about 1000 Irish citizens; Justice Minister Helen McEntee will attend the ceremony for the first time.
The first individual citizenship ceremony since the Pandemic in March 2020 will take place today in County Kerry. Plans are afoot to hold more citizenship ceremonies in Killarney in December.
So far, 154 citizenship ceremonies have taken place, and people from 180 countries have received their naturalization certificates. So far in a decade, 148,000 people have been granted Irish citizenship. Last year, the Department of Justice made 11,512 citizenship decisions, the highest number since 2015.
A total of 950 people are to be conferred with Irish citizenship at two separate ceremonies at the Gleneagle INEC Arena in Killarney presided over by Minister for Justice Helen McEntee, retired High Court Judge Bryan MacMahon and retired District Court Judge Paddy McMahon.
Speaking ahead of the ceremony, Ms. McEntee said she would attend a citizenship ceremony for the first time and was proud to welcome the many people who have chosen Ireland as their home. "There is nothing like overcoming the experience of seeing our newest citizens in person and seeing firsthand what it means for them to complete their citizenship journey," she added.
In July 2020, Ireland became the first European country to host the e-Citizenship Ceremony after the Covid-19 restrictions, and then granted a temporary arrangement for 15,000 applicants to complete their naturalization process by signing a legal loyalty declaration online.
Today's ceremony will be televised live by the Department of Justice.
