New Delhi: The U.S. expects another record-breaking year when it comes to issuing visas to Indian students this summer, U.S. Charge de Affairs Patricia Lasina said on Tuesday.
Last year, the United States issued visas to 62,000 Indian students. This year, the embassy has opened 100,000 appointments for student visas, an official said.
Speaking on Student Visa Day at the US Embassy, Lasina said, "Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Mission India has issued more student visas than ever before in 2021. We look forward to another record-breaking student season this summer."
"United States of America values international students and our academic institutions, communities and their rich contributions. This is especially true in India. Indians are the second largest group of international students in the United States," Lasina said.
The US Mission in India on Tuesday organized the sixth Annual Student Visa Day.
The consulate officials at the US Embassy in New Delhi and the Consulate General in Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai interviewed more than 2,500 Indian student visa applicants, the embassy said in a statement.
International students enrolled in academic programmes at US universities and colleges study on an F-1 visa and those enrolled in technical programmes at vocational or other recognised non-academic institutions, other than a language training programme come to the US on an M-1 visa.
India sent the largest number of students (251,290) to the US after China (478,732) in 2017 and 2018, according to the latest Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) 'SEVIS by the Numbers Report' 2018. The number of students from India increased from 2017 to 2018 by 4,157.
