Presidential Election 2022: Manmohan Singh has arrived In a wheelchair to vote

NEW DELHI: Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrived in a wheelchair today to vote in the presidential election.

Voting took place by secret ballot in parliament and in state legislatures across the country today to elect a new President of India.

Former Jharkhand governor Droupadi Murmu is the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate, set to win the election, while her opposition rival is Yashwant Sinha.

Manmohan Singh, 89, was seen for the first time at the parliament house in a wheelchair. The veteran had taken leave for the winter session of parliament last year on health grounds. He was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi on October 13 last year after he complained of weakness following a fever. He was discharged from the hospital on October 31.
The Samajwadi Party's founder Mulayam Singh Yadav joined them by casting his ballot in a wheelchair. Yadav, 82, has had a number of health issues for some time, and over the past year, he has spent a lot of time in and out of the hospital.

Pradipta Kumar Naik, the BJP member and leader of the opposition in the Odisha Assembly, arrived in a wheelchair and an oxygen cylinder straight from the hospital. He was admitted to a private hospital in this area for post-Covid issues.

In the presidential election, which puts Droupadi Murmu of the NDA against Yashwant Sinha of the combined opposition, the first votes were cast at 10 am by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President JP Nadda. The vote would stop at five o'clock.

Voting for the presidential election, in which Droupadi Murmu of the NDA is competing against Yashwant Sinha of the united opposition, started on July 18 morning. Ashok Gehlot, the chief minister of Rajasthan, M. K. Stalin, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, Eknath Shinde, the chief minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, and Manish Sisodia, the deputy chief minister of Delhi, were among the early voters in the presidential election that was also taking place in a number of state assemblies.

While nominated MPs and MLAs are ineligible to vote in the election, members of legislative councils and around 4,800 elected MPs and MLAs are. Voting is taking place concurrently at a number of state assemblies in addition to the first-floor room 63 of Parliament House, which has been converted into a voting location.
