IRELAND: "Reek Sunday" Croagh Patrick Pilgrimage Many people will climb the hill today for St Patrick's blessing

Mayo: "Reek Sunday" Croagh Patrick Pilgrimage Many people will climb the hill today for St Patrick's blessing.

Ireland's main pilgrimage site, Mount Murrisk in County Mayo, usually numbers in the thousands. Thousands of pilgrims are expected to climb the Mount of Murrisk in County Mayo, a pilgrimage site for more than 1,500 years. Saint Patrick is said to have fasted for 40 days and 40 nights on Croagh Patrick's mountain in 441 AD.

No one can forget Patrick when examining how Ireland came to be hailed as the 'land of saints and scholars'. Born in an ordinary family in Scotland. The event that changed Patrick's life completely happened at the age of sixteen. Attacked by pirates, Patrick and several men were captured by the savages.

There is no escape. A whole country waited with the family crying and praying. Not for one or two days, but for eight long years. Then Patrick had a dream. A boat was waiting for him a few miles away. Patrick, who always sought God's ways, thought nothing else. Returned with the group. When the journey was getting nowhere, he heard a voice again: 'Walk forward and escape. A boat is waiting.'

Within a few days he reached his native Scotland. This brilliant young man pursued advanced studies in France and elsewhere. Became a priest and a bishop. He remembered his sojourn in the forest in Ireland, where he counted his days, tears, and pain, while leading the early church in the fifth century.

Bishop Patrick was troubled by the thought of those men who sacrificed men without knowing Christ and walking in wrong ways. Am I a priest and a bishop to rest in peace? Or to spend your life for the people who do not get the glorious light of Christ?

The voice that had rippled through the forest years ago when he had fled for his life began to ring in his ears: Patrick, remember the people of Ireland. You have to come back here.' All those who accept God's appointment carry some special crosses. Novels of landing behind certain inner voices and insights. They just have to carry it. Patrick thought nothing of it. Home and loved ones were put aside. It is not the same as seeking a career to attach a mission and set out to live for it. Patrick's journey led to the establishment of the cross in Ireland.

There are many signs that God was always in the company of this great man who came down for God's mission. He has raised hundreds of dead men, in the name of Christ. 39 of them have been approved by the House. Patrick's arrival in Dublin gave him the opportunity to fulfill his prophecy about that land, which is well known. A time when Princess Dublina and King Alphimus were putting their faith in pagan gods.

Their only son died. Mothers also died while doing puja vidhis to bury their son. They invited Patrick into the crumbling family. Patrick introduced Christ to them. They accepted him. Patrick resurrected the two dead children with the word of God. This became a topic of discussion in the whole country. Patrick was made the patron of that city. After the reign of Princess Dublin, the city became known as Dublin. Today it is the capital of Ireland.

Ireland is a country that has contributed many missionaries to the world. Although the population density is very low, the contribution of this country in molding saints and scholars is immense. St. Patrick has always been the pride of the Irish people.

The climb to the top of Croagh Patrick, traditionally held on the last Sunday in July, returns to normal for the first time since 2019 on Reek Sunday today, the annual pilgrimage day. Every hour from 8.00 am to 2.00 pm Mass will be celebrated and confessions will be heard.

The 10.00 Am Mass will be celebrated in Irish by the Bishop of Killaloe, Fintan Monahan, and a special prayer will be offered at the Mass for the protection of all road users. Bishop Monaghan, the Road Safety Authority and the Gardai have joined forces in a call for care on the roads amid rising deaths and serious injuries on Irish roads.

Pilgrims, who traditionally make the pilgrimage barefoot, have been asked to prepare for the physically demanding pilgrimage and the changeable weather and to follow the instructions of stewards, mountain rescue teams, the Order of Malta and gardaí.

Pilgrims are asked to comply with several requests such as staying on the defined path, not encroaching on nearby habitats or leaving litter.

A 'Sustainable Access and Habitat Restoration Project' is currently underway with several partners on the 765m high mountain. This includes creating a strong road for access and restoring damaged parts of the mountain.

The Catholic Church said it was aware of its obligation to support the preservation of the mountain for future generations and committed its support to the project to minimize the impact of the pilgrimage on Croagh Patrick.
