INDIA: Govt standardises process to issue IDP: India's International Driving Permit (IDP) is valid in 102 countries including "Ireland"

The government has introduced a uniform format for international driving permit (IDP) issued in the country, said a statement from the ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH) on Monday. The document will now be issued in the form of a booklet and will also have a QR code for all driver-related information that authorities in the country being visited can review, said the ministry.

The new standardised format of the IDP will be issued by respective state authorities and it will be valid for a period of one year from the date of issue.

Data from the MoRTH, seen by HT, shows that about 75,000-100,000 IDPs are issued by states and Union territories in the country annually. In most states, including Delhi, one can now apply for an IDP online.

"At the moment, different Indian states have different IDP formats, sizes, patterns, colours, etc. As a result, several citizens had issues with their respective IDP while travelling abroad. The format, size, colour, etc. for IDP has now been standardised for issuance throughout India and in compliance with the Geneva Convention thanks to this revision to the Central Motor Vehicle Rules 1989, according to a statement released on Monday by the MoRTH.

The US, UK, Canada, UAE, Australia, Ireland, South Korea, Russia, South Africa, Thailand, and New Zealand are just a few of the 102 nations where the IDP is legal. According to ministry officials, any problems persons may have with being verified by local authorities while travelling abroad should be resolved by the universal format.

Being a party to the Geneva Convention of 1949, India is required to issue International Driving Permits (IDPs) in accordance with its provisions in order for other nations to recognise them on a reciprocal basis.

The IDP will not be valid in some nations, including China, Pakistan, Germany, and Nepal. These nations have not ratified the convention.

The announcement said, "The ministry issued a notification on August 26 to bring the modifications into effect for increased facilitation of citizens in the issue of International Driving Permit (IDP) across the country.

The IDPs will also include a QR code provision that will connect the permit with the owner's driver's licence.

The requirement to provide a current visa and medical certification for an IDP was eliminated last year, and travellers are now able to renew these permits online through Indian embassies if they expire while they are still abroad.

According to the ministry official previously cited, the requirement for a visa was removed since numerous nations offer Visas on Arrival, and in such situations, a person filing for the IDP in India prior to travel would not be able to obtain a visa.

As a result of the realisation that an Indian citizen with a valid driving licence shouldn't be required to provide another set of medical certifications for an IDP, the requirement for a medical certificate was also eliminated, the official continued.

A comparison of vehicle classifications among several Conventions and the Central Motor Vehicle Rules of 1989 have also been introduced, according to the notification released on August 26. This is done to make it easier for regulatory authorities.
