Knock is famous for apparitions of the Holy Mary, Saint Joseph, Saint John and the Lamb. It was through this apparition on 21 August ,1879 that the Knock shrine came to the world's attention. On a wet dark August evening in 1879, the villagers of this place had spent the day doing the usual work of the harvest time of the year – gathering winter fuel and fodder. As evening approached, the heavy mist that had been persistent throughout the day, turned to a steady downpour. The villagers gathered around the turf fires in their homes, taking comfort and shelter on a terrible night.
Suddenly word spread throughout the village that something extraordinary was happening at the Church and so they hurried to the windswept gable where they witnessed a heavenly vision surrounded in a brilliant white light. Men, women and children gathered in prayer at the gable wall of the parish church. The apparition, accompanied by countless angels as if giving the impression of a heavenly atmosphere, lasted for two hours and was witnessed by the entire village. However, in the context of expert studies, the official testimony of 15 people was accepted by the Vatican as evidence for the confirmation of the apparitions. The Knock Pilgrimage Center has been built at the place where the apparition took place. More than Tens of thousands of devotees come here every year.
Although Marian apparitions have occurred in many countries, Knock is characterized by apparitions of the Lamb and Saint Joseph, which can be described as unusual. The apparition at Knock also included the eucharistic message, as the Passover Lamb appeared above the altar and before the cross. In 2021, the Vatican decided to raise the famous pilgrimage center of Knock in Ireland to the status of an international pilgrimage center.
