Passers-by spotted the car and alerted Gardaí, who were on fire when they arrived. A child was taken by ambulance to Mullingar Regional Hospital, where the child was pronounced dead. The remains of a girl were found inside the car. A woman was treated at the scene and later airlifted to a hospital in Dublin for further treatment. Their injuries, though serious, are understood to be non-life-threatening.

Last night gardaí carried out technical and forensic examinations at the scene in a bid to establish how the fire started. The car was taken into custody for further investigation. Further examinations were carried out at the scene last night, led by State Pathologist  Dr Sally Anne Collis, and post-mortem examinations of the two children will be carried out today. Garda sources say the outcome of the post-mortem and evidence gathered from the technical examination will determine the course of the investigation.

The small community of Multyfarnham, Co Westmeath. is trying to come to terms with the tragedy. As a mark of respect for the dead, the local GAA club has canceled games and training this weekend.

An incident room has been set up at Mullingar garda station and a senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the investigation. A Garda Family Liaison Officer has been appointed and Gardai say they will continue to support the family in partnership with other state agencies.

Gardai are appealing for anyone with information in relation to the incident to contact Mullingar Garda Station on 044 938400 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 11.
