Newly-elected British Conservative party leader Liz Truss has become the UK Prime Minister after being formally invited by Queen Elizabeth to form a government.

After meeting the queen in Balmoral, Scotland, this afternoon, Ms Truss will return to Downing Street where she is expected to address the British nation before getting down to the business of appointing her Cabinet.

The queen had earlier accepted the resignation of Boris Johnson at an audience in Balmoral.

Micheál Martin, the Taoiseach, congratulated Ms. Truss and said the two of them would speak in the coming days.

He stated in a statement: "Our two nations are connected by a common history, as well as strong social, economic, and cultural links. The Good Friday Agreement must be supported by a strong relationship between our two administrations in order to promote peace and prosperity on these islands."

"We can use the period ahead to focus EU-UK interaction, and to secure agreed conclusions on the challenges around implementation of the Northern Ireland Protocol," Mr. Martin said.

Speaking in Shannonbridge this afternoon, he said: "I think officials are working on setting up an engagement and a dialogue with the British Prime Minister."

Fresh cabinet and crucial roles

Some of the most important positions have already been reserved for a number of important allies and supporters, notably Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng, who is widely anticipated to be awarded the essential position of chancellor.

If confirmed, he will be in charge of implementing her "radical" strategy to cope with rising energy costs that have put families and businesses in danger.

Following a summer of legislative gridlock, the new administration may provide details as early as Thursday in an effort to soothe uneasy voters.

Suella Braverman, the attorney general, is anticipated to be promoted to home secretary, while James Cleverly, the secretary of education, is anticipated to be named the new foreign secretary, among other significant appointments.

While Ben Wallace is anticipated to remain as defence secretary, Therese Coffey, the work and pensions secretary who is regarded as Ms. Truss's closest friend at Westminster, is likely to be in line to become health secretary.

Conservative MPs will keenly monitor other nominations for any indications that she is willing to bring in ministers who did not necessarily back her in the leadership contest.

During the parliamentary phase of the leadership race, Ms. Truss did not have the backing of the majority of Conservative MPs, with former chancellor Rishi Sunak winning among fellow Conservatives.

Her victory in the party's final vote, which she won by a comfortable margin of 57% to 43%, was still closer than it had been in the previous three Tory leadership elections.

Mr. Sunak stated he did not anticipate being given a new ministerial position, but he assured he would give Ms. Truss his "whole support" from the opposition benches.
