UK Presidential Election: The UK presidential election is over and the results will be announced on Monday

London: The voting in the Conservative party leadership election to replace Boris Johnson as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom finished on Friday. The result is expected to be announced next week. Notably, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss is likely to be named the winner.

The deadline for Tory members to register their choice between Indian-origin former Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Truss closed at 5:00 pm (1600 GMT) on Friday, after a two-month contest. In these two months, the final contenders toured the country and took part in debates.

The result of the Conservative party leadership election will be announced at 12:30 pm on Monday, reported AFP. Conservative Party chairman Andrew Stephenson thanked Sunak and Truss for taking part in the "gruelling schedule in good spirits".

According to AFP, Stephenson stated, "I feel our party is ready to unite around a new leader and tackle the difficulties we face as a country ahead." This year's voting started in August. whereby over 200,000 members of the Conservative party took part.

As per the Conservative Campaign Headquarters, a total of 19,859 Tory members attended the 12 events and a total of 2.2 million people viewed these events across online platforms. After Johnson was forced to retire due to a string of scandals and a wave of resignations from his government, the race to succeed him started in mid-July.

According to reports, Truss received a resounding majority of votes from Conservative Party members. She pledged to cut taxes and prioritise economic growth during her campaign. AFP quoted Truss as stating, "I have a bold strategy that will expand our economy and give higher salaries, more security for families, and world-class public services."

Sunak, though, called Truss's promises "reckless" and criticised them. He said that he would be the best person to lead the UK amid the present economic crisis due to his experience managing the nation's finances during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Following the election, the new prime minister of the UK will meet with the monarch at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, where she spends her summers. Then, on Wednesday, either Truss or Sunak will speak before the House of Commons.
