Switzerland: The number of newly reported Covid-19 cases have dropped dramatically, the World Health Organization said Wednesday, urging the world to seize the opportunity to end the pandemic.
Newly reported cases of the disease, which has killed millions since appearing in late 2019, last week fell to the lowest level since March 2020, said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
"We have never been in a better position to end the pandemic," he told reporters. "We are not there yet, but the end is in sight."
But the world needed to step up to "seize this opportunity", he added.
"A marathon runner does not stop when the finish line comes into view. She runs harder, with all the energy she has left.
"We too must. The finish line is visible. We're in a position to succeed. However, the moment to stop jogging is now "He issued a warning.
"We run the risk of more mutations, more deaths, more disruption, and more uncertainty if we don't seize this opportunity now."
The WHO published six policy briefs on Wednesday in an effort to assist nations in taking the necessary steps to contain the virus.
According to Tedros, "These policy briefs are an urgent call for countries to examine their policies closely and improve them for Covid-19 and other diseases with the potential to cause pandemics in the future."
Utilize this chance.
The WHO urges nations to invest in immunising 100% of the most vulnerable populations, like as healthcare professionals and the elderly, and to continue testing and sequencing for the virus.
Tedros added, "We can end this pandemic collectively, but only if all nations, businesses, neighbourhoods, and people stand forward and grab this chance.
The number of reported cases decreased by 12 percent to 4.2 million for the week ending September 4 compared to the prior week, according to the WHO's most recent epidemiological data on Covid-19.
But because many nations have reduced testing and could not be catching the less severe cases, it is thought that the true number of infections is far greater.
Since the start of the pandemic, WHO has tallied more than 600 million cases, and some 6.4 million deaths, although both those numbers are also believed to be serious undercounts.
