The prime minister described the installation of Netaji's statue as part of the Centre's Rs 13,450-crore Central Vista project as a "new path to an empowered India".
Inaugurating the event, the Prime Minister said that 'Kingsway', a symbol of colonialism, would become a history and be erased forever. A new era has begun in the form of "Kartavya Patha". Rajpath was for the British who were the slaves of the people of India. It was a symbol of colonialism. Now, its architecture has changed and so has its soul. I congratulate all the people of the country as we come out of another symbol of colonialism.
Commemorating Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose's contribution to the nation, Prime Minister Modi said, “Today, a huge statue of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose has been installed near India Gate. During the British rule, there was a statue of a representative of the British here. By erecting Netaji's statue, we have paved a new path for an empowered India. During the last eight years, we have taken many decisions which bear the stamp of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. He was the first leader of 'Akhanda Bharat' to hoist the national flag in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The black granite statue, part of the Central Vista project, is carved from a 280 metric ton monolith. The granite selected for the statue was transported from Telangana to Delhi and the statue was carved out of it over two months.
Meanwhile, the new duty road will be more pedestrian-friendly due to new red granite pavements spanning 15.5 km, replacing the existing bajri sand. According to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, four new pedestrian underpasses have been constructed at busy junctions to separate vehicular traffic from pedestrians, making the street safer.
According to an official, 74 historic light poles and all chain links have been restored, refurbished and reinstalled at the site and more than 900 new light poles have been added where necessary to ensure that the visitor space is always safe.
A new triangular Parliament building, a common central secretariat, a new Prime Minister's residence and office and a new Vice President's enclave are envisioned as part of the ambitious Central Vista redevelopment plan of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP government.
