The company said the decision was a "strategic" one and part of creating a new organizational structure across several locations.
It said the new structure will be “leaner and simpler”.
The company did not specify which roles will be cut in the change.
In a statement, the firm stated that it "recognises that publicising such an intention has a tremendous impact on people and generates uncertainty."
It stated, "Novartis is committed to keeping associated informed in a timely and transparent manner as is practicable."
According to Irish legislation, the corporation said it will consult with employee representatives on these recommendations.
Around 108,000 people globally are employed by Novartis.
Over 1,500 people are currently employed by the company at its two Dublin and Cork facilities.
