RIYADH — A 41-year-old Indian man from Kerala has been executed in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, following his conviction for attempting to smuggle a large quantity of narcotics. The execution was officially confirmed by the Saudi Ministry of Interior.
The convict has been identified as Abooty Vellili, a native of Peringadi, Mahé, near Thalassery in Kannur. The incident dates back to 2023, when security forces intercepted his GMC van as he attempted to enter Saudi Arabia by land from Oman. During the vehicle inspection, authorities uncovered 43 kilograms of prohibited drugs hidden inside.
Throughout the legal proceedings, Abooty maintained his innocence, claiming he was merely carrying a parcel given to him by someone else and that he was unaware it contained narcotics. However, the trial court found him guilty based on substantial evidence presented by the prosecution.
The death sentence was subsequently upheld by both the appeals court and the Saudi Supreme Court. Following the issuance of a royal decree by the Saudi leadership, the final execution procedures were carried out. Official notification regarding the matter has also been communicated to the Indian Embassy.
