Gardaí have launched an investigation after a large wooden sculpture erected on Waterford's Greenway route was destroyed in a fire. After firefighters were unable to save the artwork, they appealed for help from the public.
It was established as a biodiversity project earlier this year as a tribute to the Irish mythological deity of Éiriu. The center of the sculpture - Éiriu’s body body - is now an ash with only the arms and legs remaining.
Early on Friday morning, a huge wooden structure in Carriganore, on the outskirts of the city, caught fire. The fire department was summoned to the scene.
Although the fire was subsequently put out, garda reported that the sculpture had been "destroyed".
Garda is looking for any witnesses or anyone with knowledge to come forward as they are treating it as a case of criminal damage.
John Hayes of Special Branch Carvers, a renowned woodworker who also created the 23-meter sword buried in Waterford's Viking Triangle, carved the sculpture of Éiriu.
In partnership with South East Technological University, it was put in place in March of this year as a part of a biodiversity project.
