Iran: As anti-hijab protests rage in Iran, activists hack a live broadcast on a state television channel. The channel was hacked and images of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei painted with a cross and fiery images were added.
"The blood of our youth is in your hands" was also written. The channel was hacked around 9 pm on Saturday. In other anti-regime messages, activists spray-painted "Death to Khamenei" and "Police murderers of the people" on public billboards in Tehran. They also posted pictures of Amini and three other women who were killed in the violence that killed at least 95 people.
Protests erupted in Iran following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. Footage of Khamenei meeting with officials was also hacked and intercepted. The slogan "Join us, rise up" was displayed for a few seconds and black and white pictures of the three women were displayed.
Mahsa Amini, who was detained for not wearing hijab properly, was killed in police custody. They were detained for allegedly violating the dress code in the Islamic country. Amini was killed on September 16.
State news agency IRNA reported that "police forces fired tear gas to disperse crowds in dozens of places in Tehran," and demonstrators "shouted slogans and set fire to and destroyed public property, including police booths."
The mass protests that erupted in Iran following the death of a young woman named Mahsa Amini in custody continue for the 19th day. People have been burning with anger in the streets since Amini's death on September 16, three days after the notorious morality police arrested a Kurdish woman for violating the Islamic Republic's strict dress code for women.
Yesterday too, people took to the streets in protest in more than 17 cities of 14 provinces of the country. Currently, the strike is focused on high schools and universities. More than 400 people have been killed so far in police violence against protesters. More than 10,000 people were injured and are being treated in hospital. At least 20,000 people are reportedly still in police custody.
American President Joe Biden came out in support of the anti-hijab protestors in Iran. Biden's response was published on the White House website. He said that the action of the Iranian authorities is a violation of human rights. He said that Iran's religious police and authorities will have to answer tomorrow for the atrocities being committed against the people of their own country.
