Tyrone: Two Northern Ireland police constables were attacked while patrolling the Mount Carmel Heights area of County Tyrone at around 11pm last night.
Investigations are at an early stage, however, and the attack, which is believed to have been caused by an explosive device, damaged a police vehicle and is being treated as an attempt to kill two officers. The road is closed and authorities are advising motorists to avoid the area. No homes have been evacuated at this time.
A security alert was put in place in the Mount Carmel Heights area of Strabane this morning. Up to 600 homes and over 1,000 people were affected by the subsequent security alert. The largest residential area in the community is now cordoned off by police. The Police Service of Northern Ireland has confirmed that it follows an attack on police just before 11pm last night.
Police in Northern Ireland are now investigating the bombing of two police officers in Strabane. Investigators are calling the attack an attempted murder. A spokeswoman said the scene was sealed off as detectives investigated the attack. A police spokesman said a further update would be provided in due course.

Strabane is about 80 miles (130 km) west of Belfast, near the border with the Republic of Ireland. Politicians on both sides of the border condemned the attack.
