Met Éireann has issued two status orange warnings. A second status orange snow and ice warning is in place for Leinster from midnight tonight until 10am tomorrow. A status orange snow and ice warning is in place for Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Clare, Connacht, Longford, Louth, Meath and Westmeath until 10.00am tomorrow.
People are being warned that the combination of snow and strong east to northeast winds will cause more hazardous road conditions, travel disruption and poor visibility. Forecasters say that some areas are expected to experience significant snow cover along with snowfall.
Schools that have decided to close due to bad weather may take the decision for the safety of children, the Education Department said. A nationwide snow warning is currently in place, with significant snowfall in parts of the country - notably Limerick, Kerry and Clare - leading to some school closures, but most schools across the country are open.
"Schools are not required to notify the department of closures related to weather events," a department spokeswoman said in a statement today.
At present, status orange alerts have been issued in 13 counties and status yellow alerts in remaining counties.
