The Road Safety Authority (RSA) has advised road users to check local traffic and weather conditions before starting any journeys.
Motorists are advised to clean windows and mirrors and use a screen scraper and de-icer before leaving. Do not use hot water on the windscreen as it may break the glass.
The RSA said motorists should slow down, use all controls carefully and keep extra distance between themselves and the vehicle in front.
They are advised to avoid over steering, hard braking, hard acceleration and use the highest gear possible to avoid wheel spin. Cyclists and motorcyclists are advised to wear cold-resistant clothing and always be extra cautious.
Pedestrians are advised to wear appropriate footwear and walk only on footpaths. If there is no sidewalk, pedestrians must walk on the right side of the road facing traffic. The RSA urged pedestrians not to underestimate the danger of ice and to exercise extreme caution when approaching a footpath, road or snow-covered path.
